Digital Operations Center (DOC) · Amazon · Decision system
Turning 400+ sites of operational data into one global decision system.
1. Outcome
A Digital Operations Center (DOC) for Corporate Security, one view from a single site up to the Chief Security Officer, so failing systems are found fast and decisions rest on the same numbers.
2. The problem
Corporate Security relied on separate monthly reports and hand-assembled views of how sites were performing. Failing security systems were found late, and there was no single view that ran from a site up to the Chief Security Officer.
3. My responsibility
I was the operational driver and business owner. I drove the concept, the requirements, the choice of metrics, the stakeholder interviews and reviews, the use cases, design input, rollout and adoption. The Corporate Security Digital Transformation team built the software.
4. Before and after
Before
- Sites compile monthly reports by hand
- Each region assembles its own view
- Leaders review late, inconsistent numbers
After
- Access, CCTV, alarm, incident and audit data flow in
- One view: global, region, cluster, site
- Thresholds raise alerts and managers act daily
5. What was built
- The DOC brings together access control, CCTV, alarms, security-system health and diagnostics, incidents, audits, building-entry and maintenance measures.
- Drill-down from global to region, cluster and individual site, filterable by date and metric.
- Alerting against agreed thresholds, so failed systems show up quickly.
- Used for daily site management, quarterly and annual business reviews, senior executive reviews, budget and investment decisions, and policy changes.
- Its users ran from site security managers, cluster and regional managers through Global Operations, technical teams, Finance and Facilities to Directors and the Chief Security Officer.
- I used the same capability for Amazon's return to office, including daily security updates to executives.
6. Controls and governance
- Agreed metric definitions, so every site is measured the same way.
- Threshold alerts with a named owner at site, cluster and region.
- Audit results visible next to the operating data they relate to.
7. What changed
- Fewer manual reports.
- Failing systems found much faster, with quicker maintenance response and less downtime.
- Better audit visibility and stronger management accountability.
- Operating and budget decisions made on one set of numbers.
